Workplace Violence Awareness
| INTRODUCTION |
|
Workplace violence, an important safety and health issue in today's workplace, affects employers
and employees as well as the general work environment. In response to this emerging problem,
the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provided funding to Alabama Technology
Network (ATN) to develop the Workplace Violence Recognition and Prevention Handbook and Seminar
Series. The purpose of the Handbook and Seminar Series is to provide small to mid-size
businesses and industries with information on how to recognize and prevent workplace violence.

| |
| THE PROBLEM |
Most small to mid-size companies lack adequate resources to develop appropriate training
Materials to educate employees about:
- Situations that may make the possibility of violence more likely, and/or
- Behaviors that have the potential to escalate into a threatening or violent incident.
These companies do not have time to devote to adequately train supervisors, management or
employees in recognizing and preventing potentially violent situations that may occur before,
during or after work hours. The result is that employees in these companies are at a
disadvantage in being able to recognize, appropriately deal with, and report a potentially
violence situation. The Work Place Violence Prevention and Awareness Program seminars
provide the training to companies alleviating the need to research and develop a program from
scratch.
